Dear Friends,

Each year, the U.S. Service Academies accept a select few of our country’s best and brightest students to a four-year undergraduate program. The U.S. Military and Naval Academies consistently rank in the top 20 liberal arts colleges and they provide this education free of tuition.

For a student to be considered for an appointment to an academy, the applicant must have a nomination from an authorized nominating source. As a Representative in Congress, I can nominate students that live in my district and exhibit the type of character, scholarship, leadership, physical aptitude, goals, and motivation required by the academies. I am fortunate to have a distinguished panel of current and retired military personnel who review the applications, conduct interviews, and advise me to select the most qualified candidates.

As we move forward into the application period, I want to ensure that you are aware of the academy resources available for counselors and students through my office. The application and basic information can be found on my website. However, the academy application process differs from the standard college application and students may not be accustomed to that process. With that in mind, if you have any questions, please contact Rebecca Wolfson in my district office at (650) 342 0400 or rebecca.wolfson@mail.house.gov. The deadline for applications is Nov. 1, 2012.

For those of you interested in learning more about the application process, I invite you to attend my Military Academy Night on Tuesday, May 22. This event is for high school students interested in attending a military academy or counselors and teachers who would like to learn about the nomination process. Representatives from the Military Academies - U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy - will be on hand to answer questions. Download the flyer for the event here.
