$700M for NY Students and $250 for Seniors

August 27, 2010

Dear Friends,

Listen to my Audio Tweet about NY's
Race to the Top win!
This week I'm excited to announce that New York State has been selected to receive $700 million in grant money from the Department of Education's Race to the Top competition.

The award will provide close to $300 million to NYC schools to expand a range of proven reforms that will improve our schools and better equip students for college and the jobs of the future. New York’s schools have made diligent strides towards excellence and I'm confident the Race to the Top funds will help accelerate that progress.

I would also like to remind you that this summer, the government began mailing out the one-time tax-free $250 rebate check to thousands of seniors to help close the coverage gap in Medicare prescription drug benefits. The fourth round of checks will be sent out at the end of August.

If you haven't received a check but believe you should, please call 1-800-MEDICARE. Individuals receiving Medicare Extra Help will not receive a rebate check.

Democrats Fighting
for Small Business

Watch me speak to entrepreneurs at a small business conference in our district, or read my blog entry.
For further assistance, you may call my New York or Washington, DC offices or send me an email through my website, where you can find more information.

These grants and checks were developed by the House Ways and Means Committee under my leadership, and were another effort by Democrats and President Obama to help American through the economic crisis toward a brighter future. And we won't stop fighting for our youngest to the oldest constituents.

To hear more about what I'm doing for you in Washington and around the District, please go to my website at www.rangel.house.gov. I also encourage you to engage with me on my Government Facebook page.

Best regards,

Charles B. Rangel
