Creating and Saving 290,000 American Jobs
August 6, 2010
Dear Friends,
Hello. This is Congressman Charles Rangel.
By this time, I hope that you have heard that Senate Democrats have long last been able to pass a bill that will help preserve thousands of jobs for our teachers, our firefighters, our police and other public servants.
As you know, our cities and state are in desperate financial need and we in the House of Representatives have been pushing not only to preserve jobs, but also to create jobs.
This bill does that, delivering critical funding to states and local communities. Nationwide, it will create and save 290,000 American jobs – including 140,000 teacher positions and 150,000 police officers, firefighters, nurses and private sector jobs throughout our economy.
In New York alone, the measure brings more than 607 million dollars, preventing more than 7,100 teachers from being laid off statewide. The Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act, as passed by the Senate will also continue additional federal Medicaid assistance for six months from January 1, 2011 through June 30, 2011. That translates more than 2.2 billion dollars that New York will be able to use to provide vital services to those who need it the most.
As a result, Nancy Pelosi, our Speaker, has called us back from August recess in order to pass this bill and pass it now. I am convinced that our people would rather not just hear us tell you why we should be re-elected, but rather tell you what we have done to preserve these jobs.
And so this is not the time for our wealthy to fighting for an extension of tax cuts. This is a time to be concerned about people who have lost their homes, their livelihoods, but worst of all, lost hope.
So I look forward to returning to Washington and working with my colleagues to getting this bill into the President's hands as soon as possible. In these difficult economic times, we must have the courage to make important investments that will put money in people's pockets, spur both short term and long term job growth and support those who are looking for a leg up, not a hand out.
