MY DEBT CEILING VOTE

August 5, 2011
Dear Friends,

President Barack Obama signed the debt ceiling on Tuesday, after the Senate voted 74-26 to reduce government spending and effectively raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling through the end of 2012. The House voted 269 to 161 in favor of the deal on Monday. I voted against the Debt Ceiling bill because I believe that we must address the Federal Deficit with a balanced approach. The proposed $2.5 trillion in spending cuts will harm our most vulnerable while not creating jobs. Instead it will result in more layoffs at a time when there are already 25 million unemployed people who are looking for work. We should be enacting legislation that creates jobs, not destroy them.
