"Republicans In Senate Block Relief For Unemployed Workers"

July 16, 2010
Dear Friends,
This week the Senate passed the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act that will end the era of abuses by “too big to fail” banks that have cost too many working families in New York and across the country their homes, their jobs, and their retirement savings. I believe the bill goes a long way in helping Americans re-establish their faith in our financial system.
Yet we have another hurdle to overcome to help Americans get back on their feet: Senate Republicans are blocking relief for unemployed workers. Democrats have been pushing for weeks to extend benefits for over 2.4 million workers whose payments are about to expire. The extension would continue benefits through the end of November. We won't stop fighting to get this legislation passed.

And we'll continue working with President Obama to end the recession and get the economy growing again. The Recovery Act has created or saved over 3 million jobs nationwide, including more than 206,000 jobs in New York. The economy is on track to create an additional 500,000 jobs by the end of the year.
Please keep your hopes and chin up. I'll keep on working to restore your dignity and livelihood.
Best regards,
Charles B. Rangel
P.S. On Thursday I reintroduced the Universal National Service Act (H.R.5741), a bill that would reinstate a compulsory military draft, or alternative national service, during times of war, for men and women, aged 18 to 42, who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Watch me on the floor explaining why. |
