Can't Let It Double
April 27, 2012
Dear Friends,
This past week, we watched the President slow jam his way across America to call attention to the coming crisis in student loans - an issue which should concern all of us. This July, the interest rate on student Stafford loans is slated to double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent as the College Cost Reduction and Access Act expires. My Democratic Colleagues and I decided it is time for earnest action to prevent the burden of student loan debt from continuing to crush college students across America- the future of our great nation. Today, the House voted 215-195 to freeze subsidized student loan interest rates at 3.4 percent for one year. The problem, however, is that Republicans plan to pay for this by cutting programs that would help keep American families healthy. We should not have to choose between the well-being of our country and the future of our country. That is why I endorse the President's plan to pay for it by closing payroll tax loopholes for millionaire corporations. Higher education is the single greatest creator of opportunity for children across our nation and they should not find themselves drowning in educational debt. We have a chance to make that opportunity a reality for everyone.
