Last Minute Tax Tips
April 13, 2012
Dear Friends,
This coming week, the House will consider H.R. 9, the Small Business Tax Cut Act. However, half of the proposed tax cuts in this bill would go to the nation’s millionaires and not to the small business owners who need them the most. This bill is not targeted towards job creation. The Republicans have not paid for this $46 billion tax cut, which will only increase the deficit. Yet they are willing to support cuts to programs that help the neediest in our country, claiming that they are trying to balance the budget. Simply put, Republicans continue to believe that it is important to keep taxes low for the nation’s top 1%; Democrats believe that everyone should pay their fair share. President Barack Obama has recently proposed the "Buffet Rule," which would raise taxes for the top 1% and ensure that a billionaire’s secretary would no longer have to pay a higher percentage of income in taxes than her boss. I will continue to fight for fairness in our tax system and prevent cuts to Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, and programs that protect our neediest citizens.
And finally, let me remind you that the deadline for filling taxes is next Tuesday, April 17. Below, and on my website, I have provided you with some resources to assist you.
