Jobs and Equality

March 9, 2012
Dear Friends,

This week the U.S. Dept. of Labor released the February Jobs report which showed the economy added 233,000 new jobs last month, marking the 24th consecutive month of private sector job growth. There is still more progress to be made: While the national unemployment rate remains at 8.3 percent, the lowest in three years, Black and Latino unemployment rates remain disproportionately high at 14.1 percent and 11.4 percent, respectively. Such economic inequality cannot continue to exist. We must work in a bipartisan fashion to pass legislation and help President Obama to further create initiatives that will decrease the minority employment gap in our country. Republicans are merely intent on rolling back unemployment insurance benefits, repealing healthcare, cutting Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, and most recently defunding mass transit as well as obstructing women's rights to reproductive health. It is time for Republicans to join Democrats to build a future and an economy where everyone in America would have a fair opportunity for success.
