Protecting American Homes

March 2, 2012
Dear Friends,

America’s housing crisis began when President George W. Bush allowed a culture of deregulation that promoted irresponsible consumer lending. The result has been a collapse in the housing market that has plagued our economy. Since 2007, an estimated 4 million American families lost their homes to foreclosure. Today, another 12 million owe more money their home is worth. It is time for justice and compassion - and Democrats have a plan. On February 9, 2012, President Obama announced a $26 billion settlement that will save 2 million current and former homeowners. This week, my Progressive Colleagues and I sent a letter urging Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to offer loan forgiveness that would prevent foreclosures and save taxpayers money. The Housing crisis has affected everyone, Republicans and Democrats alike. I urge Congressional Republicans to join us in keeping a roof over America's head.
