My staff and I are always available to help constituents cut through some of the red tape when dealing with a federal agency. I am proud my staff and I were able to help Valentina clear up some problems with her visa after visiting family in Peru. Now she is back teaching in the classroom at Foster Elementary in Arvada.

Ed,

I have finally made it back to Denver after weeks of trouble with my Visa. I've already had my first day at school. I will never forget the overwhelming love and appreciation shown by my students and by all the staff.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to you and your staff for all you have done and the support you have giving me through this ordeal, so let me thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Gracias,
Valentina

Arvada Fire Department Receives Federal Grant

Last week I had the privilege to present the Arvada Fire Protection District with a $77,676 Assistance For Firefighters (AFG) Grant to help with equipment and training to help keep our communities safe. Now more than ever we need to support the first responders who risk their lives to help keep us safe.

At one point this week there were three wild fires burning in Jefferson County including the large Indian Gulch Fire. This is important to note because the budget debate taking place in Congress has a direct impact on the ability of firefighters to respond to emergencies. I did not support the House Republican’s budget proposal that would cut hundreds of millions of dollars from important law enforcement and firefighter grants. I understand the importance of getting America’s fiscal house in order but we should not balance our budget on the backs of the first responders who keep our neighborhoods safe.

Help the Denver Metro Area Promote Smart Growth
Participate in DRCOG’s Live Work Play Initiative

The Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) is celebrating 10 great places in the metro area that exemplify the livable communities concept. Last year I sponsored the Livable Communities Act to help ensure local, state and federal entities have the resources they need to do long-term sustainable planning and development for their neighborhoods. This kind of planning helps create jobs for our communities and encourages energy efficiency practices to be considered as we develop and grow in our local areas.

From DRCOG's website: "Live Work Play 2011 shines the spotlight on 10 great places, events and projects in livable communities throughout the Denver metro area over the next three months, culminating with the April 13 announcement of a People's Choice award winner. Mixed-use and mixed-income urban centers work in concert to make our region not only livable but memorable, as outlined in Metro Vision, the Denver metro area's shared vision of its future. Vibrant urban centers are clean, safe, compact, 24/7 environments. They are sustainable when people and businesses comingle, creating a sense of place that attracts people of all incomes and ages to stay while they live, work and play."

Click here to vote on the project you think is the best example of a great to place to live, work and play in our area. Also, plan to attend the April 13 awards ceremony at Mile High Station to celebrate these great places we all live, work and play.
