I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a joyous holiday season and a happy new year. Thank you for subscribing to my newsletter and I look forward to keeping you updated on more legislation, news and events in 2011. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve my friends, neighbors and local communities in Congress.

Please take a moment to review some important tips to promote toy safety during this holiday season. Last year over 186,000 toy-related injuries occurred in the United States. Safety is always a concern when it comes to those we love and must be a top priority as we head out to shop.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has released three key tips for toy safety this holiday season:
  • Which Toy for Which Child. Always choose age appropriate toys. For children under 3, avoid toys with small parts, which can cause choking. For children under 8, avoid both toys with sharp edges and electric toys with heated components.

  • Gear Up for Safety. Include safety gear whenever shopping for sports-related gifts or ride-on toys, including bicycles, skates, and scooters.

  • Location, Location, Location. Young children should avoid playing with ride-on toys near automobile traffic, pools or ponds. They also should avoid playing in indoor areas associated with hazards such as kitchens and bathrooms and in rooms with corded window blinds.
For more detailed information about the CPSC’s toy safety guidelines, click here.

The CPSC also issues recalls on dangerous products. Click here for information about the most recent recalls. If you believe you or your loved ones have been a victim of unsafe toys, report the incident by submitting this form.

Job Fair Follow Up Information

Ed talking with constituents at the Job Fair

Earlier this month my office hosted a Job Fair at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. Almost 20 employers who were hiring were at the event and over 700 people showed up. My office plans on hosting another job fair next year and we will send out information once we have it. I want to thank the employers, the Jefferson County Fairgrounds and the Jefferson County Workforce Center for making this event a success.

Employers who were on hand include: Comcast, SOS Staffing (Vestas Wind), Ball Aerospace, National Renewable Energy Lab, Lockheed Martin, Xcel Energy, Department of Veterans Affairs, Home Instead Senior care and many more. For more information about these companies and job openings visit the Job Resource Center on my website.

House Votes to Repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell
Stand Alone Bill Passes House

Yesterday the House voted to repeal the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy in a stand alone bill that is now awaiting Senate action. I voted in favor of this bill to end an injustice. Our nation is most secure when the bravest and best Americans answer the call of duty, regardless of sexual orientation. This discriminatory and harmful policy has weakened America’s security by depriving our nation of the service of thousands of troops who served their country honorably – and forcing even larger numbers of troops to lie about who they are. The American people and the US military overwhelmingly believe we are a stronger nation without DADT, and I am proud to cast this vote.

This past May, the House passed this repeal, as an amendment to the Department of Defence Authorization bill. The bill is supported by the Department of Defence and allows them to implement the repeal consistent with military readiness, effectiveness and unit cohesion and recruiting. One Hundred Fifteen thousand (115,000) active duty, National Guard and Reserve personnel answered the Pentagon’s DADT survey, and 70% said repealing DADT will not hurt them or their unit.

Update on Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010

As of this writing, the House is still waiting to debate and take final action on this legislation. I already voted to extend tax cuts for people making less than $250,000, for extending unemployment insurance benefits, and permanently extending estate tax exemptions. Unfortunately, the Senate did not pass these important stand alone measures. Please stay tuned for more information on House action on these critical tax and benefit measures.
