Open Enrollment for Medicare ends December 7, 2012. If you are currently on Medicare or expect to apply, you still have time to find and determine a Medicare plan that best fits your needs. For more information about Medicare plans, please visit www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan.

If you have questions about Medicare options, I encourage you to participate in my Medicare Workshop this Friday, November 16 from 11 am to 1:30 pm. The Medicare Workshop is an opportunity to meet with professionals from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and counselors from St. Anthony's Health Passport. Be sure to bring your prescriptions and current Medicare plan to the workshop.

The Workshop will be held at the Jefferson County Public Library at 10200 West 20th Avenue in Lakewood. For more information and a map of the location, please click here.

Happy Thanksgiving

I want to wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving. As a father of three daughters, I understand the hard work and sacrifice families are making, and I will continue to fight for policies to help put people back to work, make credit available for small businesses and push for more manufacturing here in America.

My District Office in Lakewood is here to help the hardworking people of the 7th District. If you are having problems with a federal agency such as Medicare, Social Security, or the VA, my office can help open the lines of communication. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my District Office at (303) 274-7944.

Food Safety Tips for Tailgate Cookouts

As a sports fan I know the thrill of tailgating before and during sports games. Running water and refrigerators aren't staples of tailgating events, so it is important to follow simple food safety tips to keep your food safe.

Here are a few guidelines to prevent food-borne illness:

  • Cooking meats at the appropriate temperatures ensures no harmful bacteria are remaining in the food.

    • Poultry and leftovers should be cooked at 165 °F.
    • Ground meats should be cooked at 160°F.
    • Beef, pork, lamb, and veal should be cooked at 145°F.

  • To check that food is fully cooked, a food thermometer is important.
    • Raw ground beef, pork, lamb, and veal should reach an internal temperature of 160°F.

  • If meat is partially cooked then it heightens the risk that the bacteria will not be destroyed and may even multiply. Once beginning the grilling process it is important to continue cooking the meat until it is fully cooked.
