Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is quickly approaching and it is important to take extra precautions to keep our children out of harm's way. Several safety measures can be taken to protect our children as we enjoy the holiday. Below are some safety tips for trick-or-treating and enjoying the fun of Halloween.
  • Abduction Safety: Any porches that are not lit should not be approached. Children must know to never enter stranger's homes or cars. Teach your children to scream and find the nearest parent or safe place when approached by a stranger. Adults shouldn’t ask children for driving directions, tell your kids not to approach any vehicles especially if they offer candy.
  • Walking Instructions: Young children under 12 years old should be accompanied by an adult. Kids unaccompanied by an adult should go in groups and notify parents of the route they are taking. Set a curfew so your kids know when to be home, and a good phone number to call in case there are any problems.
  • Street-Crossing Safety Tips: Children do not always recognize that cars may have trouble seeing them at night. It is important that children wear light colors or attach a reflective tape to costumes and stay on sidewalks. With all the excitement of Halloween, children may be compelled to run across the street. Teach your kids to stop and look both ways before crossing streets, and to never assume the driver will stop.
  • Flu Prevention: As the weather begins to change, make sure your kids are bundled up in warm clothes and wash their hands regularly.
  • Candy Safety: Always have your children check with you before eating candy to ensure it is unopened and not tampered with. Any homemade or home-wrapped foods should be avoided and not eaten.

As a father of three daughters, I understand the worries and importance of keeping our children out of harm's way through the holidays. Together we can keep our community and district safe.

Declining Gas Prices

High energy prices affect all areas of our lives including the cost of basic necessities such as gas and food. The good news is for the first time in over a decade, imports accounted for less than half the oil consumed in America in 2010. In 2011, import dependence fell again to its lowest level in 16 years, leading to a decline in prices.

Areas of our state have seen the prices at the pump drop by 10 cents in the past week. The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates this trend is supposed to continue, with prices falling approximately 30 cents by Thanksgiving.

Despite these recent successes, there is no quick fix. Coloradans and Americans know we have to invest in a diverse "all of the above" energy portfolio, including construction of the Keystone XL pipeline and the extension of the wind energy production tax credit, so we can continue to expand domestic production of oil and gas, reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign oil and make America energy independent.

Constituent Success Story - John from Wheat Ridge

My office is here to help the hard working people of the 7th Congressional District cut through some of the red tape when dealing with a government agency. If you are having an issue with a federal agency, please call my office. My staff and I will always do our best to help. I'm proud my office was able to help John confirm his son’s coverage under Tricare prior to his international travel.

"I am very grateful for the help Congressman Perlmutter gave me in getting my son's eligibility for Tricare confirmed prior to my departure on vacation. My son's health is of great concern to me and after receiving so much conflicting information from Tricare about his eligibility, it was very important to finally have the matter settled. Congressman Perlmutter handled my situation in a highly efficient manner and for that I am very grateful."
