National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Ed, his wife Nancy, family & friends at the Race for the Cure in Denver

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and is a time to reflect on how cancer impacts so many of our friends and families. Last weekend I joined my family and friends and tens of thousands of others at the Race for the Cure to support my sister who is battling breast cancer. This year’s event raised $3 million for breast cancer awareness and research.

One of the most important provisions of the Affordable Care Act is the new policy to prohibit insurance companies from denying people coverage for pre-existing conditions. Once a person has cancer in their life they may be considered as having a pre-existing condition. In the past these people could be denied coverage, or forced to pay unaffordable premiums, but starting in 2014, this discrimination is prohibited. I will continue to support funding for cancer research and also defend the rights of Coloradans to have affordable and full health insurance coverage.

Ask Ed
"Where are the Jobs?"

Whether I'm at the gym, grocery store or the dog park, people come up to me to ask questions or talk about the issues important to them. Sometimes I get similar questions from a bunch of different people. So, if you have a question, and especially if one of your friends and neighbors have one too, fill out the form here, and every month I will try my best to answer it on video in the "Ask Ed" section of my website.

Important Medicare Enrollment Dates

I wanted to inform you of changes to the Medicare Part B and Part D Open Enrollment period. This year the enrollment period starts sooner and ends earlier. Open Enrollment begins October 15 and ends December 7. During this time, people with Medicare can add, drop or change their coverage. Any changes made will take effect January 1, 2012.

Determining what coverage you have now and comparing options is often challenging. You can make changes to your coverage either by visiting the Medicare website, www.medicare.gov, or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE. The website offers tools that allow you to compare prices and coverage, and check your eligibility for Medicare if currently not enrolled.

The Affordable Care Act also provides important new improvements to Medicare, including the following benefits:
  • Medicare covers all of the costs for a one-time, comprehensive "Welcome to Medicare" preventive visit during the first 12 months that you have Medicare Part B. Click here to learn what the visit entails and how you can take advantage of this benefit.

  • Those who have had Part B for more than a year can get a "wellness" visit to develop or update a personalized plan to prevent disease based on your current health. This visit is covered once every 12 months.

  • A host of preventive care services to help you save money and get better coverage.

Now is a good time to review your current Medicare plan. Whether you are presently enrolled in Medicare or are responsible for the health care decisions of others who are, Open Enrollment is an important time to discuss coverage options.
