In 2010, the Pew Center on the States estimated Colorado had over 3.5 million eligible voters, yet only about 82 percent were registered to vote. October 9th marks the voter registration deadline for the upcoming election, and I encourage all Coloradans to verify and update their voter registration.

To register to vote in the State of Colorado, you must meet the following qualifications:
  • Be 18 years of age or older at the time of the next election;

  • Be a United States citizen;

  • Be a Colorado resident and have lived in your current precinct for at least 30 days before the election; and

  • Not be serving a sentence of confinement, detention, or parole for a felony conviction.
Please click here or visit my website where you will find an interactive guide to understand the requirements to vote in Colorado and information on how to verify your registration.

Our right to vote as American citizens is sacred and I want to ensure all Coloradoans' voices are heard.

The Make It In America Challenge

My number one priority is to help put people back to work by ensuring America out-innovates, out-builds and out-educates the rest of the world. To further this goal, last week President Obama announced the Make it in America Challenge to spur economic development at home and bring jobs back from overseas. The challenge provides $40 million in competitive grants for projects bringing jobs back to American soil, and builds on the Administration's small business-based approach to strengthening our economy. This will provide for public works projects, local incentives for insourcing, manufacturing of new technologies, and training opportunities for increasingly technical occupations. American businesses want to stay competitive in the global marketplace while bolstering the domestic economy. The Make it in America Challenge will help companies insource, expand, and train American workers for jobs of the 21st Century. I continue to support the Make it in America Agenda which is a series of measures I believe will help us increase our manufacturing and put Americans back to work. The best way to reduce our deficit and grow our economy is to get people back to work and make things here in America again.
WWII Medal Award Ceremony -- PFC Jess Lopez

Yesterday, I had the great privilege of awarding PFC Jess Lopez his long-overdue WWII medals. PFC Lopez was awarded five medals for his courageous duty serving in our armed forces and his participation in the occupation of Sicily in July 1943.

After contacting my District Office in May, my office worked with the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) to salvage PFC Lopez's military records. Like many WWII military records, PFC Lopez's file was destroyed in the fire of 1973 at the NPRC in St. Louis. With my office, the NPRC, PFC Lopez, and those close to him all working together, we were able to track down his military records and award him the medals he earned.

"After 70 years I felt honored and blessed that I was presented my medals. I wish to thank Congressman Perlmutter, his office, the military and all who were involved for your good work on the presentation of my medals."

- PFC Lopez from Lakewood
"On behalf of my grandfather Jess Lopez and our family, we wish to thank Congressman Perlmutter and everyone for all the effort and time spent for the very nice medal ceremony honoring my grandfather for his WWII service. It was an honor having Major General Joseph Anderson to present them. We will never forget the efforts that went into the day."

- Chris, PFC Lopez's granddaughter
