Homeless Veterans Funding Secured for Aurora

Ed with members of the Colorado military & veterans community.

Earlier this month I had the honor of presenting a $436,272 U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development - Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Grant to the Aurora Housing Authority to help homeless veterans obtain permanent housing. I am proud to have helped obtain this grant which will help approximately fifty veterans find rental housing. For more information about this program contact the Aurora Housing Authority at: 720-251-2100.

Unemployment Insurance Extension Passes

Last week, we finally broke the log jam of Republican obstruction and sent the long overdue extension of unemployment benefits to the President. While our economy is starting to turn around, there are still millions who depend on these benefits to simply stay afloat. Unfortunately, Senate Republicans held up this extension for more than seven weeks causing an estimated 2.5 million families and over 34,000 Coloradans to lose benefits.

Unemployment benefits help people get back on their feet, get back to work and provide critical demand into our economy, which is the first crucial step to getting our debt under control. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found extending unemployment compensation to be one of the most cost-effective and fast-acting ways to stimulate the economy, creating up to $1.90 in economic activity for every dollar in unemployment benefits. Additionally, the Economic Policy Institute estimated unemployment benefits were responsible for creating 1.1 million jobs since the recession started, and adding 1.7 percent to the gross domestic product.

This extension retroactively restores benefits to people who started losing their benefits as early as the end of May 2010. If you have any questions about unemployment benefits please contact my District Office or visit the Colorado Department of Labor & Employment website.

Tomorrow Is the Last Day to Participate in the 2010 Census!

If you didn’t receive a Census form, forgot to mail it, or you didn’t get a home visit from a census worker, you can call in your information. The Census only takes place every ten years and it is critical that people take this last opportunity to respond to the Census questions by phone by this Friday. Being counted in the Census means better schools for our children, more firefighters and police officers to protect our community, and funding to help repair our roads. An accurate count helps the federal government allocate approximately more than $400 billion of federal funds annually for these and other programs and services.

You can quickly, safely and confidentially answer Census questions by calling the following U.S. Census Bureau phone numbers from 8 AM to 9 PM by this Friday, July 30th at:

1-866-872-6868 General toll-free English language assistance line;
1-866-928-2010 Spanish language assistance line;
1-866-935-2010 Chinese language assistance line;
1-866-945-2010 Vietnamese language assistance line;
1-866-965-2010 Russian language assistance line;
1-866-955-2010 Korean language assistance line;
1-866-939-2010 Puerto Rico English language assistance line;
