Celebrating District 7's Olympic Athletes

In just a few short weeks, our country will send 530 of its finest athletes to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games. The hard work, dedication, and perseverance of the U.S. Olympic Team is inspiring. I am proud we have this opportunity to showcase the strength and unity of the United States, on and off the field. As co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Olympic and Paralympic Caucus, I believe in the mantra, "if we make it in America, we will make it in America," and that is why I and other co-chairs sent a letter urging the United States Olympic Committee to manufacture the Team USA uniforms here in America rather than overseas.

The 2012 Olympic Games are a triumph for the United States and for Colorado. I am proud to congratulate two of District 7's determined athletes: David Herman from Wheat Ridge, who will compete in cycling, and Missy Franklin from Aurora, who will compete in swimming. I look forward to cheering on two of our own as they represent our district, state, and country in the most historic athletic game competition in the world.

As we draw closer to this historic event, I encourage those of you traveling to London to visit our 2012 London Olympics FAQ Page and consult our helpful Pocket Handout. I wish the best of luck to our District 7 athletes and the entire U.S. Olympic Team!

Participation High at Small Business Forum and Budget Balancing Workshops

Last Saturday I joined Sen. Mark Udall in a discussion with Arvada business owners about what we can do to help them prosper. We both learned a lot from the discussion and enjoyed walking around Olde Town Arvada to visit some of these businesses and learn about the opportunities and challenges they face in our recovering economy. It is clear access to capital for small businesses is a priority, and I am working on a bipartisan bill with Rep. Mike Coffman to ensure small businesses can get the loans they need to hire more people and make things here in our country.

Also on Saturday, Rep. Jared Polis and I held a budget-balancing workshop in conjunction with the Concord Coalition. Rep. Polis and I were named two of the "Brave 38" Representatives who supported the Cooper-LaTourette budget plan which was modeled after the Simpson-Bowles budget committee recommendations. We wanted to engage our community in learning about the budget and deficit issues we are dealing with in Congress and gain some new insight and information on how we can work together to ensure we have an economy built to last. Bringing this lesson to the homes and hearts of Americans is essential to balancing our budget, and I am happy our constituents had the first-hand opportunity to do so.

Constituent Success Story: Carole from Aurora

My office is here to help the hard working people of the 7th Congressional District cut through some of the red tape when dealing with a government agency. If you are having an issue with a federal agency, please call my office. My staff and I will always do our best to help. I'm proud my office was able to help Carole's mother reinstate her widow benefits.

Thank you Ed for all your help getting my mother back on widow benefits. She was in an assisted living home and was about to be evicted because she had no income to pay her bills. After waiting for over a month for the VA to reinstate her widow benefits, I contacted your office and within weeks her benefits were reinstated. After receiving her benefits on a Friday, she knew she got it and had a big smile on her face.
