Government in the Grocery This Saturday in Arvada

Margaret Faulkner & Ed at an Office Hours meeting in Reunion

This is a program where I go to grocery stores throughout the district to talk one-on-one with constituents. I look forward to meeting with you to talk about whatever is on your mind. Government in the Grocery is about being available to listen to you in a less formal setting. This kind of access is essential to the fabric of our democracy. Please note that due to time constraints, constituents will be given priority and individuals and groups may be limited to approximately 5 minute intervals.

Debt Ceiling Debate

The White House and Congressional Leadership continue to work on a deal to raise the debt limit to honor the full faith and credit of the United States of America before the August 2 deadline. The bottom line is the United States must pay its bills. Raising the debt ceiling is not about new spending. Rather it's about paying the bills for money we already spent. It's time we start doing the job we were elected to do by working to protect and reduce the burden on taxpayers.

We are living in extraordinary times which requires us to stop playing games and holding sham votes to gain political points and power. Last month, when the House failed to honor our financial commitments, each and every American invested in the stock market lost approximately $1,300 in one day when the markets plummeted. Placing the full faith and credit of the United States at risk is unacceptable, and we cannot risk the impact a default will have on our country's credit rating. We must avoid furthering the crisis of confidence in our financial markets and our economy.

If we don't reach an agreement on how to pay our bills, the ramifications will be disastrous for all Americans. Enormous wealth and security will be lost because pension funds, 401k's, IRAs and money market funds will be severely impacted. Borrowing costs for the United States will increase dramatically, and individual Americans will see increased interest rates on mortgages, car loans and credit cards. The United States' economy is slowly recovering from the worst recession since the Great Depression, and failing to pay our bills increases the threat of a double-dip recession. Together, our country needs to develop a long-term solution to fixing our unsustainable debt trajectory, but not paying our bills is irresponsible.
