Celebrating July 4th and Independence Day

Tomorrow we commemorate the 236th anniversary of our nation’s independence. Like many of you, I look forward to celebrating our country’s freedom with family and friends at cookouts, parades, and enjoying our outdoors. I want to wish you all a happy and safe Fourth of July.

Due to Colorado's current fire ban and the high fire danger, most professional firework displays are cancelled. Fortunately, some of Denver's annual fireworks are scheduled to go on, including the Civic Center Fireworks on Tuesday, July 3; the Denver Outlaws game fireworks at Mile High Stadium on Wednesday, July 4; and Elitch Garden's Fireworks on Wednesday, July 4 at 9 pm. To find a professional firework display nearest your area and to learn of other family-friendly festivities, please click here.

Listed below is some information to help you and your family enjoy the holiday:
  • Fly the Flag - Learn how to properly display the flag outside of your home this Fourth of July. Please contact my office to order an American flag.
  • Volunteer to help our veterans - Give back to those who protect our freedoms by volunteering at a local Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center.
  • Learn more about the history of our great nation - Visit the US Capitol website to explore the exhibits from your home!
Satellite Patent Office Coming to Colorado

On Monday, Sen. Michael Bennet and I announced Colorado was selected as the location of one of three new satellite patent offices to supplement the backlogged U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, VA. The new patent offices will be built in Colorado, Dallas-Fort Worth, TX, Detroit, MI and San Jose, CA. The exact location in Colorado will be decided soon.

The opening of a new patent office in Colorado highlights the state's growing reputation as a hub for technology and innovation. A patent office in Colorado will bring good jobs to our state, spur development of new ideas and ensure we make things in America again.

Not only will the patent office entice technology-based companies and start-ups to relocate to Colorado, it could have a $440 million economic impact and support more than 1000 new jobs directly and indirectly.

Update on the Transportation Bill and Student Loan Interest Rates

Last week, I supported a bipartisan compromise to extend and reauthorize many highway and local roadway projects along with an extension to maintain low student loan interest rates. For our economy to fully recover, we need an America built to last. The transportation bill makes us more competitive for the long-term and puts millions of Americans to work in the near term by creating and saving 2.8 million transportation jobs.

Additionally, it is a relief to thousands of hardworking Coloradans that we prevented what would amount to a $1000 per year tax hike on the middle class by maintaining the low student loan interest rate.

Your Voice Matters: Jack from Lakewood

On May 26, Jack came to a Government in the Grocery to speak with me about problems he is having associated with recent FHA rules governing approval for FHA-insured mortgage financing for condos. My staff and I are working with the FHA to clarify and simplify their approval and certification process so homebuyers can access and take advantage of FHA-insured loans to buy condos.

Quote from Jack: "I spoke with Congressman Perlmutter about FHA financing issues and how they affect HOA Communities. He was VERY knowledgeable and spent time listening to me. I feel like he felt my opinion mattered. Thank you."

Constituent Success Story: James from Lakewood

My office is here to help the hard working people of the 7th Congressional District cut through some of the red tape when dealing with a government agency. If you are having an issue with a federal agency, please call my office. My staff and I will always do our best to help. I'm proud my office was able to help James receive his Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). After waiting for two years, James was approved for SSDI in October 2011. James waited patiently for his check to arrive, but when it didn't arrive by February, he contacted our office. My office inquired with the Social Security Administration and within weeks James received retroactive payment for his SSDI and is now on a regular payment status.

"Thank you, thank you. SSDI finally released the funds to my account. Congressman Perlmutter's office was the only one to get any results and they were very helpful. Thank you Congressman Perlmutter and all of his staff."
