Each spring my office sponsors an art show for high schools in the 7th Congressional District. The winner gets their work displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year. I would like to thank all of the talented students who contributed to the show this year. I would also like to thank the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design for hosting this great event and awarding a Student Scholarship to Danielle Chartier of Bear Creek High School, Southwest Airlines for donating two tickets for the winner to fly to Washington D.C. for the Congressional Art Show Reception, and Meininger Art Supply for donating gift cards. This year we had our highest level of student participation yet and I continue to be so impressed with their talent and creativity.

Due to time constraints, we must limit each person or group to approximately five-minute intervals. Priority is also given to constituents.

My Office Is Here to Help You!

One of the most important functions of serving in Congress is helping my constituents cut through some of the red tape when dealing with government agencies. While my office will not always be able to help, I take pride in having the most responsive District Office possible. We help constituents with many casework issues including passport, IRS, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and Veterans Administration (VA) benefits. If you have any questions about potential casework please call my District Office at: 303-274-7944.

Ed and Sheryle Hutter at a Government in the Grocery in Aurora.

Dear Ed,

A huge thank you to you and your staff for assisting me with a 5-year-old IRS problem. I had tried everything, working with 5 or 6 different IRS technicians to resolve this issue but to no avail. I finally spoke with you about the problem last spring and through assistance from your staff I was put in contact with the Taxpayer Advocates Office and the problem has finally been resolved. After review of my documentation the advocate mediated with IRS for a positive resolution, clearing a huge, unfounded debt to my small business account. Thanks again, for you and your staff’s hard work.

Health Care Reform Helps Your Small Business

Small businesses are the engine driving our economy and represent over half of all private sector employees. Unfortunately, rising health care costs have been threatening small businesses over the past few decades. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act helps to curb this unfair burden on America’s small businesses through several new provisions.

Starting this year, qualified small businesses can receive a tax credit of up to 35 percent of the employee premiums they pay and by 2014 - this credit will increase up to 50 percent. Companies may still claim the federal benefit even if they already receive state tax credits, and the credit applies to dental and vision care as well as medical coverage.

To qualify, small businesses must:
  • provide health insurance to their employees,
  • contribute at least 50 percent of the total premium cost, and
  • have fewer than 25 full-time employees with average annual wages of less than $50,000.

An estimated 4 million small businesses nationwide qualify for the tax credit, which will provide approximately $40 billion in relief for such companies over the next decade. All small businesses would also gain access to online resources that would help them choose the best health care coverage for their employees. Employees at small businesses that do not receive insurance would be eligible for their own tax credits to purchase insurance through exchanges. Find out how your small business can claim the tax credit here. You can also visit my Small Business Resource Center for a clearinghouse of tax and health insurance information.
