Health Care Reform is Helping Coloradans

Last month Congress passed and President Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. This bill is the most comprehensive health care insurance reform in decades. In the past two weeks I have heard from many Coloradans about how this reform will positively impact their families.

Dear Ed,

Thank you for voting for much needed health care reform. This issue is very personal to my family and we genuinely appreciate your efforts. My oldest son, Doug, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes which requires expensive medicine and supplies. Unfortunately, my husband is self-employed and could not afford insurance for a family of five. We had no choice but to put Doug on Cobra at a cost of $371.79 per month for one child. My husband and I and our two other children are still without insurance. As you can see, our family, and so many others are grateful for this legislation.

Sincerely,
Barbara Stevens

Although certain provisions will not take effect until 2014, some benefits will start immediately. Others will begin as soon as 90 days from the bill’s signing. A health care calculator about how reforms will specifically affect you can be found here. Please read the list below for a detailed timeline of benefits:

Effective in 2010

  • Coverage for Children with Pre-Existing Conditions. Insurers will be barred from denying coverage to children with pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Closing the Medicare Prescription Drug Doughnut Hole. Seniors who face a shortage in prescription drug coverage will receive a $250 tax rebate. The entire gap will be closed by 2020.
  • Coverage Extended for Dependents. Insurance companies must allow adult dependent children to remain covered on their parents’ plan until age 26.
  • Adults with Pre-Existing Conditions. Adults with pre-existing conditions will be able to buy into high-risk insurance pools.
  • Ban on Lifetime Limits. There will no longer be a cap on the amount paid out to individual policy holders.
  • Ban on Rescissions. Insurers will be prohibited from dropping coverage for participants when they get sick.
  • Early Retiree Coverage. Individuals who retired between the ages of 55 and 64 will be able to maintain their previously held employer-based coverage.

Did You Know Today is Census Day?

If you have not filled out and returned your Census 2010 questionnaire please make sure to return it soon. It is only ten questions long and the data collected impacts how much federal funding our communities will receive for determining locations for new hospitals, improving schools, building new roads, expanding public transportation options and creating new maps for emergency responders. For more information about the Census and how your community or town is ranked with questionnaire return rates click here.
