The mission of the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is to conserve, protect and enhance the habitats of fish, wildlife and plants throughout the United States. Each fall, the FWS expands their mission by continuing the Junior Duck Stamp Program (JDS) to educate students about conservation of our nation's natural resources and to nurture students' interest in science and art.

The JDS program invites students (K-12) to learn about their state's wildlife and natural parks through observation. Then, students are asked to create an artistic image that exemplifies their observations of local wildlife in their habitat. Each piece of art is entered into a state contest, which awards first, second and third place for the opportunity to be "Best in Show" for Colorado. The winner of "Best in Show" moves on to the national competition. The winning Duck Stamp is sold by the U.S. Postal Service for $5 each and proceeds from sales support environmental education. Proceeds also provide awards and scholarships to students, teachers and schools that participate in the JDS program.

If you or a student you know are interested in this exciting program and want to view wildlife right here in our communities, visit two of the 7th Congressional District's U.S. Fish and Wildlife Refuges - Two Ponds or the Rocky Mountain Arsenal.
