HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF EFFORTS

Listed below is some important information from the White House Office of Public Engagement, which includes the phone number to call if someone is trying to find the status of their loved ones in Haiti and suggestions for those who wish to make a cash donation to help with the vitally needed relief efforts in Haiti.

For the most up to date information throughout the coming days please continue to monitor http://www.whitehouse.gov/HaitiEarthquake. A top priority is accounting for the thousands of American citizens who are currently in Haiti. Families of Americans living in Haiti who are trying to find the status of their loved ones are encouraged to contact the State Department at 1-888-407-4747 - please note this line is experiencing a high volume of calls at this time.

Cash donations are the most efficient and effective way to help the relief effort in Haiti right now. They allow humanitarian organizations to purchase (often within the affected region itself) the exact type and quantity of items needed by those affected by the crisis. Read about the advantages of monetary donations here. You can immediately donate to the Red Cross to assist the relief effort. Contribute online to the Red Cross, or donate $10 to be charged to your cell phone bill by texting "HAITI" to "90999." You can also find more ways to help through the Center for International Disaster Information, or through USAID’s interactive website, which has a list of NGOs and instructions on how to help: http://www.usaid.gov. Those looking to donate time, supplies or funds should contact the Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI) at 703-276-1914, or visit them online at http://www.cidi.org/incident/haiti-10a/

New Student Loan Information

There is good news for college applicants and their parents - a simplified application for student aid, or FAFSA form, is available to the public. The form, which was released on January 1, eliminates about 20% of the questions, mostly by avoiding redundancies. Other major changes include a streamlined online experience, along with an instant estimate of federal loan and Pell grant awards.

These changes to the FAFSA form will help more young people attend college. Be sure to click here to access the new form online and here for a breakdown of deadlines.

Small Business Success Story
Big Papa’s BBQ Opens New Restaurant

This week I attended the grand opening for the third Big Papa’s BBQ location. I met Big Papa’s owner and constituent Frank Alfonso and his business partner, Bill Cossoff, at a Government in the Grocery this summer because instead of building walls, they were running into walls trying to get a loan to finish their planned restaurant expansion. My office helped them work with a different bank to secure a loan to finish the construction and get the new store opened. For more information about Big Papa’s and how we helped, click here.

These are exactly the kinds of small businesses our banks need to lend to and we need to foster and promote. Big Papa’s has a solid business plan, they are hiring 40 plus people in our community in addition to contractor work. Unfortunately, their situation isn’t unique, and I am working through the Financial Services Committee to get credit flowing to these small businesses so we can put people back to work and rebuild our economy.

“This is an example of how the public and private sectors can work together to put people back to work and celebrate a successful business expansion in our neighborhood. We want to thank US Bank, our staff, the contractors, vendors and Congressman Perlmutter’s office for their help in making this a reality,” said Alfonso and Cossoff.

National Influenza Vaccination Week

This week is National Influenza Vaccination Week, to highlight the importance of influenza vaccination and to promote greater use of the flu vaccine after the holiday season, into January and beyond. This year, the emphasis will be on the H1N1 vaccine.
