Dear Neighbor,

The economics of this Holiday Season offer us a chance to do more than to simply give gifts. I am committed to buying American made products and services and hope you will consider doing the same this holiday season. If you’d like to share your thoughts on this matter, please send me an e-mail.

If you are spending your hard-earned money on American products and local services, you will help create jobs and stimulate the local economy. Economists estimate that if every American spent an extra $64 on American products, 200,000 new jobs would be created.

Not all presents have to be things. You can give a loved one a hair cut at a local salon, an oil change at a local garage, or a membership to a gym, a gift certificate for a local restaurant or bookstore. How about a subscription to a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) from a local farmer, gardening services for a season or home cleaning? When we spend our money locally, it stays in our communities and preserves and creates local jobs. Three out of four new jobs are created by small businesses.

Of course, the Holidays are much more than shopping. This is a personal time for family and friends, a time to give thanks and to help the less fortunate. For a list of local volunteer opportunities click here. I hope that you have a wonderful holiday season, and a bright 2012.

Sincerely,

Richard Neal
U.S. Congressman
