Working to Stop Unnecessary Spending

Dear Friends,
Just like American families who make tough decisions every day, the Federal Government must learn to live within its means. America’s small businesses make choices every day about how to maximize the effectiveness of very limited resources. Similarly, the federal government should be making the tough decisions necessary in order to make the most out of every single taxpayer dollar.
“The Government Performance and Results Modernization Act of 2010,” increases transparency and accountability to the federal government by bringing to light the efficiency and effectiveness of federal agencies, providing that information to Congress and the public, and ultimately forcing decision-makers to make more informed decisions about how taxpayer dollars are spent.
This type of results oriented approach to government has improved the value and efficiency of state-level programs across the country. It is long overdue for Washington to take the same, commonsense approach.
Specifically, the “The Government Performance and Results Modernization Act of 2010” would:
- Require that federal agencies assess performance on a quarterly basis to ensure federal taxpayer dollars are being spent in an effective manner.
- Make these assessment reports available on a single public website so that both Congress and the American people have access to critical information on federal agencies’ strengths and weaknesses.
- Require each agency to designate a Chief Operating Officer who will be held accountable for agency results.
- Require the federal budget office to identify duplicative and outdated agency reporting and reduce the number of annual written reports by ten-percent.
- Require action if an agency’s programs have not met performance goals for a fiscal year.
With my support, this legislation passed the House and has been sent to the President's desk to be signed into law. As this new year and new Congress begins, I will continue to work to reduce the federal deficit.
