Dear Friends,
As the debt ceiling debate continues, I know many of you are concerned about potential cuts in funding to Social Security. This important program, which is solvent through 2036, provides much-needed financial security to many retirees across America.
As one of the most popular government programs, Social Security has been widely successful in helping American seniors retire with dignity and peace of mind. In 2008, 65 percent of households 65 and older depended on Social Security funds for half or more than half of their monthly income. Furthermore, twenty-two percent of households 65 and older relied on Social Security for their entire monthly income.
These statistics remind us that balancing the budget on the backs of our seniors is not an option. While reducing the nation’s deficit is an important goal, I want to be clear that I will not support legislation that threatens Social Security.
Sincerely,
U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre
Representing the 7th District of North Carolina
