Job Search Resources for College Graduates

Dear Friends,

This spring, many of us have had the pleasure of celebrating the graduation of a friend, family member, or neighbor.  Although this year’s 2.4 million college graduates face challenging economic times, a number of resources are available to aid in their job searches as well. While looking for a job, check out these tips:
  • Explore university career services: It is in the interest of colleges and universities for their graduates to get jobs quickly. Alumni are often eligible to take advantage of career services and can access job listings and alumni contacts through the career services office.
  • Use career networking sites: Young adults should take advantage of their familiarity with the Internet and utilize professional social networking sites such as LinkedIn or explore job opportunities posted online through sites like Career Builder
  • Utilize targeted information: Some websites, such as collegegrad.com and collegerecruiter.com, have comprehensive job listings specifically for new college graduates. Collegegrad.com even has a section listing the Top Entry Level Employers and advice for writing resumes and cover letters. College career centers should also be able to help.
  • Stay updated on future job market projections: Visit the one-year forecast change in jobs to find which sectors are currently hiring.
  • Search for a job in health care:  The majority of the 20 fastest growing occupations in the nation are in the health care field, many of which don’t require an advanced degree.
  • Search for Federal opportunities: The U.S. Office of Personnel Management recently announced a major overhaul of the Federal hiring process to make it easier to connect qualified candidates with Federal jobs. The USAJOBS website is the Federal Government’s one-stop source for Federal jobs and employment information.
  • Find out more about paying back loans:  In these challenging times, the federal government has defined more affordable ways to help repay student loans.
Once again I would like to congratulate all the recent graduates, their families and loved ones, and wish them the best in their career search. My staff and I are here to help provide our constituents with relevant information and resources to aid in any career and employment searches.

Sincerely,

U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre
Representing the 7th District of North Carolina
