More Equitable Funding For Coastal Projects
May 19, 2011
Dear Friends,
|
This week the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced a seasonal outlook that expects an above normal hurricane season. Three to six major hurricanes are expected and I am committed to working to enhance public safety and prevent property damage.
Our beaches and coastline are an important natural resource and economic engine for Southeastern North Carolina. Many families and businesses call the coast home and rely on it each and every day. Recently, I wrote a letter to the U.S. House Appropriations Committee urging them to ensure a more equitable funding balance for coastal projects in the Army Corp of Engineers budget for FY 2012.
Click here for the full text of the letter.
It is important that coastal areas get equitable funding to help prevent flooding and protect property. The Army Corps of Engineers estimates that every $1 spent mitigating coastal storm damage saves $7 in response and post-storm recovery costs.
Coastal protection serves a vital role in protecting some of Southeastern North Carolina’s most vital infrastructure assets, while helping to fuel our coastal economy. I will continue to work with our coastal communities to protect and enhance our coasts for the families, businesses, and communities that call this place home and rely on this resource for their livelihood.
Sincerely,
U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre
Representing the 7th District of North Carolina
