Strengthened Veterans’ Health Services

Dear Friends,

Last week, I voted for the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act to ensure that our veterans and their families receive the care and support they need and deserve. This bill builds on a record of accomplishments for veterans and troops over the last three years – including the new G.I. Bill to provide returning troops with the promise of a college education; historic investments in veterans’ health care; advanced funding to prevent political or legislative delays; expanding economic opportunities for returning soldiers and improving care for those with PTSD.

Representative McIntyre welcomes troops home from a 15-month deployment to Iraq.
The Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act will reform and improve veterans’ health services by supporting wounded veterans and their families and caregivers, expanding care for the growing number of female veterans, improving mental health services, and increasing access to health care for veterans in rural areas.

More specifically, this important legislation provides immediate support for veteran caregivers by creating a program to offer caregiver training, access to mental health counseling, and 24-hour respite care in the veteran’s home. It will also expand and improve the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) services for the almost 2 million women veterans currently receiving VA health care. For the first time, the VA will be authorized to provide health care for newborn infants of women veterans. Additionally, this legislation includes key provisions to improve the health care provided to our rural veterans by authorizing stronger partnerships between community providers and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. These partnerships will allow the VA to offer health care options to veterans who live far from the nearest VA medical facility. The House Committee on Veterans Affairs has additional information on the important provisions contained in this legislation.

As always, please continue to keep me informed of your opinions and concerns by phone at (202) 225-2731 or by visiting my website.

Sincerely,

U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre
Representing the 7th District of North Carolina
