How Do You Think The Federal Deficit Should Be Solved?

April 14, 2011

Dear Friends,

With a federal debt approaching almost $14 trillion, it is clear that our nation can no longer sustain itself on the current path of budgeting. As a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, I have long supported a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution and also support the benchmarks recently released by the Coalition that include: largest deficit cuts in history by 2014,cut the deficit by $4 trillion over the next 10 years, stabilize the debt and maintain a debt ratio to 60 percent of GDP by 2024, return to 2008 spending levels by 2013, reduce the deficit to 2.3 percent of GDP in 4 years, reduce the size of government, achieve deficit reduction with 2/3 spending cuts, 1/3 tax reform, and everything must be on the table including -- Discretionary Spending Cuts – both security and non-security; Tax Reform; Entitlement Reform; Other Mandatory Policies; and Process Reforms.

There are many proposals circulating in Washington including the President’s Framework For Shared Prosperity and Shared Fiscal Responsibility, the Ryan Roadmap to Prosperity, and the White House Fiscal Commission chaired by North Carolinian Erskine Bowles.

But I want to hear from you on your suggestions about the way to solve the federal deficit so please kindly check the items you think Congress should consider to eliminate the federal debt and put our nation on a better path of prosperity for all:

Sincerely,

U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre
Representing the 7th District of North Carolina
