Calling All Kids, Parents, Teachers and Coaches!
On Monday evening, May 9, 2011, Congressman Mike McIntyre, in partnership with the Community Services Department of the City of Wilmington, and the New Hanover County Parks and Gardens Department, will host “Southeastern NC in Motion,” an interactive event that teaches kids and adults the importance of fitness, sports and leading a healthy lifestyle. There are many advantages to sports participation and leading a healthy lifestyle – reduced childhood obesity rates, better grades, improved attention at school, lowered health care costs, etc. Under Congressman McIntyre’s leadership, the Congressional Caucus on Youth Sports is focused on legislation that supports these benefits, and improves the state of youth sports altogether.
“Southeastern NC in Motion” will bring to life many of the legislative priorities on which the Caucus is focused, and will use educational, fun-filled interactive stations to teach students in our area (and their families) the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, and the values of character development that come from being part of a team.
Coaches – bring your team!
The event will also honor area coaches. Our coaches are role models. They help shape the integrity, character and discipline of our youth. Because participating in sports and physical activities is important, we will recognize and honor our area coaches for their impact on our communities.
Dress to move!
Kids will participate in some stations that involve physical activity. Others will focus on healthy eating habits, and character development through sports.
