Rep. Childers participates in ribbon cutting for Lewisburg Primary School.

As many North Mississippi students return to school this month, it’s important to recognize how important education is in preparing our children for success and enabling them to secure good-paying jobs in the future. I believe quality education is one of the best ways for North Mississippi to lift itself up during today’s tough economic times.

Yesterday, I was proud to vote for legislation that will save an estimated 2,000 education jobs in Mississippi, according to the U.S. Department of Education, and 433 jobs in the First District, according to the National Association of Teachers (NEA). The Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act, H.R. 1586, helps states and local governments hire and retain teachers and other educational professionals, and is fully paid-for.

Just last week, I had the privilege of speaking at ribbon cuttings for Lewisburg Primary School and Lake Cormorant High School. These new schools will help prevent overcrowding and ensure that all students have the resources they need to receive a first-rate education. At the ribbon cuttings, I shared my support for legislation that will save teacher jobs and ensure that our students get a quality education.

I was also recently pleased to lead a bipartisan group in sending a letter to the President urging him to include a long-term reauthorization of the Secure Rural Schools Act in his 2012 budget. Secure Rural Schools provides $30.9 million from 2008-2011 for 33 Mississippi counties – 9 in the First District – and 38 school districts. Reauthorization of this legislation will prevent a 75% cut in funding, saving jobs and ensuring access to critical education resources.

Education is the pathway to jobs, a highly-skilled workforce, and strong communities in North Mississippi. I will continue working with Members on both sides of the aisle to ensure that our schools have the resources they need to save teacher jobs and provide our children with the quality education they need to succeed.

Casework Corner

I recently received a call from a lady about her husband’s Medicare benefits. She had retired from the Mississippi Public School system, and her husband’s primary insurance carrier had automatically changed. As of June 1, 2010, his primary source of insurance would switch to Medicare. After June 1, he unexpectedly had to undergo surgery. The couple was contacted by the hospital because Medicare was not listed as his primary coverage.

Wanda Cox, a caseworker in my Tupelo office, immediately started working on this case. She contacted the appropriate Medicare offices and, within several days of the initial call to my office, the situation was resolved. The husband was able to receive the Medicare benefits he deserved.
