Working to Turn Around the Economy

Many of the policies implemented during the last Congress continue to pay off, and the state of the economy is improving. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the economy added 120,000 new jobs in November and the unemployment rate dropped to 8.6% in November—the lowest unemployment rate since March 2009. But the level of unemployment is still unacceptable, and I want you to know that I will continue my hardest to advance policies that put people back to work.

Standing Up for Local Businesses

Last week the House Committee on the Judiciary held a hearing on "Constitutional Limitations on States' Authority to Collect Taxes." I had a chance to talk with local business owners from around the country to hear their concerns. Local businesses are put at a disadvantage by online companies that don’t collect state sales taxes. This unfair leg up makes buying goods in brick and mortar stores more expensive. We need our local businesses to succeed in order to get our economy back on track.

I spoke to a Michigan small business owner to get an idea of how small businesses are disadvantaged by online companies not collecting state sales taxes.

Supporting Workers’ Rights

The House Majority continues to insist on considering bills that do nothing to get our friends and neighbors back to work. H.R. 3094, “The Workforce Democracy and Fairness Act,” is just the latest example. H.R. 3094 would deny workers their right to a free and fair election to form a union by causing massive delays in union elections, encouraging frivolous litigation, and manipulating the election process. This bill undermines this process which has brought workers all over this country a safe workplace and the fair wages and benefits they deserve.

We need to focus on lowering the unemployment rate and creating jobs—not taking away the rights of hardworking Americans.

Several areas of the Whittier High School campus were featured as Hill Valley High School in the 1985 blockbuster film Back to the Future, and its 1989 sequel Back to the Future II.
