Dear Neighbor,

After a great week in Southern California meeting veterans and saluting them for their service, I have some news that I would love to share with you and your family.

Standing Up for America’s Veterans

Last week I introduced two crucial pieces of legislation that would help ease the burden on our nation’s veterans during these tough economic times. The Vet Success Enhancement Act, H.R. 3329, would give veterans the time the need to take advantage of the VetSuccess program. This program helps disabled veterans prepare for, find, and keep suitable jobs through apprenticeships, vocational counseling, and general career services. Currently, many veterans miss their window of opportunity to enroll in the VetSuccess program.

Last Wednesday I joined Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Congresswoman Karen Bass for a productive discussion with local veterans as to how we can best help the brave men and women who served our country.

I also introduced H. R. 3330, which would continue to make home mortgages more affordable for veterans. The legislation would extend the Department of Veterans Affairs guaranteed Adjustable Rate Mortgages (ARMs) and Hybrid Adjustable Rate Mortgages through 2017. This change could save veterans thousands of dollars on their mortgage payments.

Those who have put themselves in harm’s way to protect our freedoms have earned the opportunity to lead productive civilian lives. As a member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I will continue to fight to make sure our nation’s heroes get the compensation, care, and benefits they deserve.

November’s Veteran of the Month - Sergeant Tom Tislow

Sergeant Tom Tislow and his wife, Flora, in my Cerritos office.

"“The men and women of our armed forces have always answered the call to defend our nation at home and around the globe. The commitment and courage of our troops and their families is a testament to the American spirit. We are indebted to all of you for your service.”

General Martin E. Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, 11/11/11
I was truly honored to meet and recognize Sergeant Tom Tislow, a decorated Vietnam veteran, as the 39th Congressional District’s Veteran of the Month. Sgt. Tislow served in the United States Marine Corps from 1966 to 1969. He and his fellow Marines were flown in for more than twenty operations throughout northern South Vietnam and the Demilitarized Zone, providing reinforcements to armed forces units for several weeks at a time. We owe Mr. Tislow a huge debt of gratitude for the sacrifice and bravery he showed during the Vietnam War.

You can read more about Sgt. Tislow on my website by clicking here. You can also read the Cerritos-Artesia Patch’s coverage of Sgt. Tislow by clicking here.

Thank you for taking the time to read the Latest from Linda. Please do not hesitate to contact me with your feedback or if I can ever be of assistance to you.

Did you know?...

Frank Joseph Zamboni Jr., who lived and worked in Paramount, is the inventor of the ice resurfacing machine commonly referred to as the “Zamboni.” The invention transformed the job of resurfacing an ice rink from a three-man, 90-minute task, to a one-man, 10-minute job. Zamboni & Co. began and is still headquartered in Paramount, and currently sells the machines worldwide.
Sincerely,

Linda Sánchez
Member of Congress
