Dear Neighbor,

As you and your family are putting the finishing touches on your Halloween costumes and stocking the house with sweets and treats for trick-or-treaters, I wanted to supply you with a few health and safety tips to make the most of this fun holiday.

The Centers for Disease Control provides a thorough checklist for families hoping to have a "SAFE HALLOWEEN". You can find the full list on the CDC website, but a few tips that should always be followed:
  • Always trick-or treat in a group, and with a trusted adult.
  • Thoroughly examine treats for safety hazards or package tampering. Only eat factory-wrapped goods, and make sure to check your child's trick-or-treat bag before they indulge.
  • Walk, don't run from house to house. Always walk on sidewalks wherever possible and stay out of the road.
If you are in need of more information, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children provides a printable flyer of halloween safety tips. And if you are looking for a fun and helpful way to share these Halloween tips with your children, the CDC has created games and scrambles for their enjoyment. For additional resouces, see these Halloween Safety Tips offered to parents from Children's Hospital Los Angeles and these Halloween Safety Alerts from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

I hope you have a happy and healthy Halloween, taking time to have fun with your family and neighbors.

Sincerely,

Linda Sánchez
Member of Congress
