Dear Neighbor,

I am writing to highlight some things happening in Washington and our community that you might find helpful.

Helping Families Stay in Their Homes

Last Thursday, I hosted a Foreclosure Housing Summit in Lakewood. The summit gave city leaders an opportunity to ask questions and share ideas with housing industry experts to find ways to prevent families from losing their homes. I have always fought for initiatives that will help Californians realize their dreams of owning a home.

Important Social Security Information

I have long advocated for the Social Security Administration to raise the Cost-Of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for Social Security beneficiaries. I realize how much this extra income means to our seniors, and I am pleased that the Social Security Administration has finally taken steps to address this issue.

"Today, I can say to our troops in Iraq—you’re definitely coming home for the holidays."

President Barack Obama announcing the final withdrawal of our troops in Iraq by the end of this year.
As of January 2012, beneficiaries can expect to see a 3.6% increase in their Social Security benefits. With nearly 50,000 Social Security beneficiaries in our community, this increase will offer seniors some much needed relief from rising medical care, food and housing costs. Social Security beneficiaries should expect to receive a notice from SSA in mid-November regarding the COLA increase and their new benefit amounts for 2012.

Investing in Higher Education and Job Training

I am pleased to let you know that two of our local colleges, Cerritos College and El Camino College, will receive a total of $2 million in funding through a Department of Labor grant, which I supported. The grant was awarded to the California Manufacturers and Technology Association which will disburse funding to both community colleges for job training and worker certification programs.

Education has long been the great equalizer in American society, creating a path to prosperity for those not born to wealth and privilege but who are willing to work hard and learn new skills. I was proud to support this vital funding because it will provide people with the skills and training they need so they can land well-paying jobs and compete in the global economy.

Meeting with Students at Gahr High School

Last Tuesday, I had the opportunity to meet with students from Gahr High School in Cerritos. I was thrilled to spend time with so many engaged young people learning about their government. Special thanks to Ms. Nadine Roberts who invited me to come speak to her class. Go Gladiators!

Did you know?...

Artesia is the home of the East West Ice Palace, an ice rink which is co-owned by Michelle Kwan. Michelle proudly competed for the United States in many international competitions and is a two-time Olympic medalist and five-time World Champion figure skater. The Los Angeles County native opened the East West Ice Palace in 2005. The ice rink houses many of her skating medals and memorabilia and is open to the public.
