Dear Neighbor,

I wanted to touch base with you to highlight some of the things happening in Washington and our community that might be important to you.

Investing in Our Children

Last week I spoke at a very important community town hall meeting in Pico Rivera hosted by U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. The Secretary and I discussed the importance of making investments in education in southern California. President Obama’s proposal, The American Jobs Act, would help renovate our schools and keep thousands of teachers in our community’s classrooms. All told, the bill would provide $2.8 billion for modernizing schools and preventing the layoffs of 36,600 teachers statewide. Educating our kids and preparing them for the future is one of my top priorities. I am hopeful that we can get this bill passed.

Important Medicare Information—Open Enrollment Begins October 15th

The Annual Coordinated Election Period (ACEP) also known as the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period has changed. In years past, the annual enrollment period began November 15th through December 31st with any changes or choices made effective January 1st. This year, that time period has been moved up. You can join, drop, or switch your Part D Medicare Prescription Drug or Part C Medicare Advantage Plan coverage from October 15 through December 7. Please note that Medicare will NOT allow you to enroll or make any changes to your Medicare Health or Drug Plan coverage after December 7th.

Resources for Medicare beneficiaries

If you or your loved ones have Medicare, you can review and compare current plan coverage with new plan offerings using one of the following resources:

  • Visit www.medicare.gov, where you can get a personalized comparison of costs and coverage of the plans available in their area. The Medicare Plan Finder tool has been enhanced for an efficient review of plan choices. Spanish Open Enrollment information is available.
  • Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) for around-the-clock assistance to find out more about coverage options. TTY (teletypewriter) users should call 1-877-486-2048. Multilingual counseling is also available.
  • Review the 2012 Medicare & You handbook. It is accessible online at: http://www.medicare.gov/publications/pubs/pdf/10050.pdf. The handbook has been mailed to the homes of people with Medicare.
  • The Medicare & You 2012 handbook in Spanish can be found at: http://www.medicare.gov/Publications/Pubs/pdf/10050-S.pdf
  • Get one-on-one counseling assistance from the local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP).
