Dear Neighbor,

I am continuing to work my hardest to create jobs in California and to get our economy back on track. I wanted to share with you some of the things I have been working on that could have a big impact on you and your family.

Creating a Level Playing Field for California Workers

I spoke out against the proposed free trade agreements on the Floor of the House of Representatives in July.
Click here for a text of the speech.

In order to create jobs at home, we need a level playing field that will allow California to compete globally. Too many families and businesses in our communities work hard and play by the rules, but are still struggling to pay the bills. Hard-working Californians and small businesses need a level playing field. That’s why I am strongly opposed to the proposed trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea. These trade agreements will encourage big corporations to ship jobs overseas, at the expense of American manufacturing.

We’ve seen how bad free trade agreements can affect American jobs, and the results aren’t positive. The Economic Policy Institute estimates that the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) caused the loss of 879,280 U.S. jobs. An additional 2.4 million jobs have been lost due to trade with China. In the end these proposed deals will hurt working families and eliminate jobs in California.

Trade can benefit our economy if the agreements are done right. Families in our community can’t afford to have their jobs shipped overseas to countries where wages are kept oppressively low. Southern Californians are the hardest working people in the world and they deserve a level playing field and a fair chance.

Congress is expected to vote on these trade agreements this week. You can be sure that I will work my hardest to get my colleagues to oppose these bad deals. I recently appeared on MSNBC to talk about these free trade agreements. You can watch the segment by clicking here.

Did you know?...

Glenn Seaborg, the 1951 co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was a resident of what is now South Gate. As a child he attended Home Gardens Grammar School, which is now called Victoria Elementary School. In January 2000, the City of South Gate designated the Seaborg family home on San Antonio Avenue as a "culturally significant landmark" and named a street in the Civic Center "Dr. Glenn Seaborg Way." The chemical element with the symbol Sg and an atomic number 106 also bears his name: Seaborgium.
