Fighting for American Workers and American Businesses

Our goal has to be putting Californians to work and strengthening producers and businesses here at home.

Last week, I worked with a Republican colleague to introduce a bill that would help end fraudulent activities that some foreign companies engage in. The legislation would ensure U.S. Customs agents aggressively enforce laws that are on the books, and would end illegal practices that hurt American workers and undercut American businesses.

If this bill becomes law, foreign competitors who had been using illegal schemes would no longer be able to avoid paying the duties they owe to the U.S.

Standing Up To School Bullies

A couple of weeks ago, I was honored to give the keynote address at the Department of Education's Annual Bullying Prevention Summit. Since coming to Congress, I have made providing students with safe schools a priority.

Earlier this year, I re-introduced the bipartisan Safe Schools Improvement Act to help create a safe learning environment in our nation’s schools. This bill would require schools and school districts to ban bullying and harassment. It would also ensure that schools protect targeted students so they are free to learn and fully realize their potential.

No child should be afraid to come to school. I will continue to work my hardest to make this bill a law.

Standing Up for the United States Postal Service

Last Wednesday, I met with local members of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) to discuss the budget problems facing the United States Postal Service (USPS). I want to make sure the Postal Service has the ability to find long-term solutions to its current budget gaps, which is why I co-sponsored H.R. 1351, The USPS Pension Obligation Recalculation and Restoration Act. Above all, I stand with our letter carriers to save the USPS along with the jobs and vital services they provide for Southern California.

“Because it’s something that happens a lot, and it’s something that’s always been around, sometimes we’ve turned a blind eye to the problem. We’ve said, ‘Kids will be kids.’ And so sometimes we overlook the real damage that bullying can do, especially when young people face harassment day after day, week after week.”

Did you know?...

The famous aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart was taught to fly at an unpaved air strip in South Gate named Kinner Field. It was located on Century Boulevard at the intersection with Long Beach Boulevard.
