Dear Neighbor,

This weekend marked the 40th anniversary of Title IX. This landmark legislation granted equality to women in institutions of higher education and helped increase the number of women’s athletic programs across the nation.

It’s given women the chance to excel and to take their rightful place as leaders and achievers on campuses across the United States.

Since its passage, the number of girls who compete in high school sports is ten times what it was forty years ago—growing from 300,000 to three million today. Women playing college sports has risen from 30,000 in 1972 to 190,000 today.

Most importantly, Title IX also had a major impact on education. It’s fostered equal access to educational opportunities in a full range of academic subjects and allowed women to pursue careers as lawyers, doctors and scientists.

In light of this anniversary, I hope you will join me in celebrating the enormous advances America’s women and girls have made due to Title IX.

I will continue to work to ensure that this opportunity is protected and expanded so that women can prepare for their future in the classrooms and on the playing fields across America.

Sincerely,

Linda T. Sánchez
Member of Congress
