Dear Neighbor,

Every January, we take a day to remember the sacrifice of Martin Luther King Jr., who ultimately gave his life to uphold our nation's founding principles of freedom and equality. In the spirit of Dr. King, I encourage you to use this day as an opportunity to give something back to our community and our great nation.

Here are a few service events in the area that you may consider attending in celebration of Martin Luther King Day:

  • Community Build Day – Saturday January 14th 8:00am to 3:30pm. Volunteers for this event will be helping to refurbish two homes in South Gate and Lynwood in need of painting, planting and light construction work. Participants are required to sign up for this event.

To sign up or if you have questions about either of the events listed above, call Sheri D. Bathurst at 562.657.4450 (tie line 327).

  • Warm Coats + Warm Hearts Annual Coat Drive – Donate any gently worn coat in collection boxes located in all Burlington Coat Factory stores. To learn more about this program click here. To locate a store near you, click here.

  • Community Gardening Project at Hollydale Park – Saturday, January 14, 2012
10:00am to 2:00pm. 5400 Monroe Avenue South Gate, CA.

Join the City of South Gate Parks and Recreation Dept., Amigos de los Rios and the South Gate Young Professionals for the second annual community gardening project at Hollydale Park. The event will focus on native California landscaping and will meet near the equestrian area at the northwest corner of Hollydale Park. Bring some gardening tools (buckets, shovels, etc.). For more information, please contact Paul Adams at (323) 563-5478 or Daisy Pizana at (562) 396-4749.
