Happy Father’s Day!

June 15, 2012

Dear Neighbor,

This Father's Day, let us all take the time to thank our Dads and Granddads for their faithful commitment and positive impact on our lives!

As Co-Chairman of the Congressional Task Force on Responsible Fatherhood, I am especially concerned with the role fathers can play in their children’s lives. During my service in Washington, I have been committed to supporting policies that reinforce and strengthen fatherhood and seek to improve the health of fathers and their children.

Prostate cancer now tops the list in new cases of all cancers expected in the United States – more than 240,000 for 2011 alone. I have co-sponsored the PROSTATE Act – the Prostate Research, Outreach, Screening, Testing, Access, and Treatment Effectiveness Act. It would help to identify best practices in education and outreach, particularly with respect to underserved populations and men with a family history of prostate cancer. In addition, I also support the American Cancer Society’s common-sense recommendation that men make informed decisions with their doctors about whether to be tested for prostate cancer. As Founder and Co-Chairman of the Congressional Caucus on Youth Sports, I am also committed to encouraging and promoting access and participation in youth sports. Active children are less likely to be overweight or involved with drugs and alcohol, and they are more likely to have better grades and improved attention in school. Children engaged in teams sports also have the added benefit of learning the value of character development that comes from being part of the team. Encourage your children to stay active!

This weekend, remember to thank the father figures in your life! Go outside to enjoy time together for healthy exercise and fun!

Sincerely,

U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre
Representing the 7th District of North Carolina
